The compass

I want a 10× effect through other people succeeding.

I have an ego, like anyone. But I get more satisfaction from helping others succeed than from being seen to succeed myself.

Expect empowerment, coaching and a genuine invitation to shape the answer—not a need for me to lead every piece of it.

Hello, I’m Sean

Developer roots. Delivery leadership. Problem solver at heart.

Role

Head of Delivery for Manage Appointments, part of the Referrals & Appointments programme.

Perspective

Originally a developer, so I understand the technical side without needing to code day to day.

Mindset

Lifelong learner, growth-minded, and usually happiest with a knotty problem to untangle.

01 · Communication

Clear. Human. Two-way.

I think out loud. Voice-first works best: give me room to talk a thought through, and I will listen in return. People talking over one another is a fast route to a worse conversation.

01

In person

Best for nuance, energy and real collaboration.

02

Teams call

A close second when we cannot share a room.

03

Message

Slack or Teams for quick, clear exchanges.

04

Email

Useful for a record. Less useful for a relationship.

02 · Working patterns

Give the thinking some runway.

A little framing and a little margin produce a much better answer than a calendar packed edge to edge.

01Voice first

I think out loud

I like to talk a problem through and discover the shape of the answer in conversation, rather than write it out cold.

02Fortnightly rhythm

A compressed pattern

Every other Friday and Monday are non-working days, creating a full long weekend every two weeks.

03Before the meeting

Frame it first

A little context in advance helps me prepare. A blank diary invite and an on-the-spot answer rarely get my best thinking.

04Meeting discipline

Less, but better

I am actively reducing the time I—and the programme—spend in meetings. Let’s be deliberate about why we are in the room.

03 · Energy

More of this. Less of that.

Charges the battery
  • Problem solving
  • Coaching people
  • Unlocking potential
  • Face-to-face collaboration
Drains the battery
  • Red tape for its own sake
  • “Can’t do” attitudes
  • Hiding behind process
  • Passive aggression

04 · Requirements

What helps me thrive.

The conditions that turn my energy into useful momentum—and help me create the same conditions for others.

01

Make ownership clear

I cannot work well when it is unclear who owns a decision. Explicit accountability creates speed and trust.

02

Make the strategy visible

Give me a clear direction and the context behind it. I do my best work when I can see how the pieces connect.

03

Invite me into the solution

Create space to contribute and collaborate, rather than only handing over a finished answer.

04

Protect candour and safety

Care personally and challenge directly. People need to be able to say the difficult thing without paying a price for it.

05

Leave margin to think

If every hour is reactive, there is no room left for the thinking that prevents tomorrow’s problems.

Values in the room

Care personally. Challenge directly.

Authenticity and psychological safety are not soft extras. They are how a great team gets bold enough to deliver change.

When stress shows up

I plan my way out of it.

Making a plan helps me see what actually needs prioritising. If I look overloaded, an offer to take something off my plate lands better than waiting for me to ask.

Beyond work

Curious by nature. Usually learning or making something.

  • 01

Lifelong learningInterested in leadership, AI and productivity, and endlessly tinkering with how I work.

  • 02

Writing a novelAbout a jilted Sheffield insurance investigator summoned by a tarot card into a Victorian occult-steampunk city built on hidden game rules—where nothing is what it seems.

  • 03

Books and puzzlesMy favourite book series at the moment is Dungeon Crawler Carl, and I try to do a cryptic crossword every day.

  • 04

ExerciseDog walks with our rescue Podenco, Choco, and VR boxing.

05 · Honest bits

Where I’m not perfect.

A useful manual includes the edges. Here are mine—and what tends to help.

01

I can over-commit

I am a serial volunteer. Enthusiasm can stretch me thinner than I should be.

Helpful move

An offer to take something off my plate is genuinely appreciated.

02

I do not always spot the hand-off

I love to delegate and empower, but I do not always notice the opportunity in the moment.

Helpful move

Offer. Do not wait for me to ask.

03

My face has no poker mode

I am not great at hiding how I feel. You may see the reaction before you hear the considered response.

Helpful move

Read it as data, not a verdict. Give me a beat and keep talking.

The best way in?

A conversation.

Bring curiosity, a real problem and your point of view. We will probably get somewhere useful.
